Making a Difference With Ashley Danielson RDN, LD
Tell us about yourself.
I love my job! I am a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist with the West Des Moines Hy-Vee HealthMarket. My store is the newest concept for healthmarkets within the Hy-Vee Des Moines market as it focuses on better for you options while still allowing customers to fully grocery shop in our store. My lifestyle is balanced (at least I try to make it balanced) by staying active and learning new things every day. I love to educate customers and clients in a fun and lively setting, with simple ways to incorporate delicious food into everyday life.
How does your business help people? How has it evolved?
As a Dietitian, especially in the retail world, most of my day is helping people. You can catch me many places during the day – in the aisles walking with a customer and helping them find an item that fits their lifestyle, meeting with clients for consultations, completing biometric screenings for business, presenting in the community, and so much more. Doing all of these helps others immensely, especially with the world that we currently live in. Google is just a touch away – the internet and people tend to hand out information that is incorrect. Dietitians have gone through an extensive amount of education and we are considered to be the nutrition experts, so please work with a local Dietitian on your nutrition needs and for any questions!
My specific job has evolved as not only being a Dietitian, but I work closely with our management need to fulfill needs throughout the store, helping with the marketing strategies and tackling all of our social media.
How did you get here? What led you to where you’re at today?
This is my second career, which has been an adventure! I decided to change my career in my late 20s, and went back to Iowa State to complete my second degree, in Dietetics. Doing this was one of the biggest and hardest challenges that I have taken on…it created a lot of stress, but it also created a whole new world of learning and excitement. It was so very worth it! I was offered my job with Hy-Vee at the end of my Dietetic Internship, and I’ve been with the company for almost two years.
What do you love about the Des Moines community?
I grew up in West Des Moines, and after my first degree, decided to move back to the area. I always had big plans to move away, but my family is here, which is a very important piece in my life. Not only have I been able to stay close to them, but I met my husband as well. If I wouldn’t have moved back, I definitely wouldn’t be where I am today.
Des Moines has evolved into a “big city feel”, and I love the options that it offers – we can grab dinner at a restaurant downtown, stroll around the farmers market, or we can just stay at home to cook and enjoy a bottle of wine. There are a lot of possibilities in the area, and I don’t take advantage of them as nearly often as I should!
What makes you tick every day?
This is a great question! My motivation for life is quite high and I think wanting to continue to pursue career opportunities in my life is a big one. I thrive off of learning and becoming a better person so I can help others even more. I’m pretty routine – I wake up early, workout at the yoga studio or gym, and continue to keep moving so I can stay productive and feel accomplished. I also take time out for myself to stay sane and reduce stress.
Personally, my family creates that motivation for me and they continue to push me to become a better person. My husband and I are expecting a new addition in April 2020, and the excitement of growing our family is pretty amazing.
