Tell us about yourself and your practice?
I am a Sports Medicine Physician specializing in diagnosing and treating sports related injuries and concussions. I relocated to West Des Moines (from Ontario, Canada) in January of 2022 and started Dr. Shannon Bauman--Sports Injury and Concussion Clinic located in the new MidAmerican Energy RecPlex on Grand Avenue.
What makes your office unique?
I am the only female sports medicine physician in the area. I absolutely love sports and exercise and truly love taking care of athletes. I believe each sports injury is unique and I spend the time to figure out the full picture of what has caused an individual’s injury and what may contribute to ongoing symptoms. I have been a team physician for many professional athletes, national team athletes and have been a physician at the winter Olympics in Vancouver (2010). I am a world leader in the field of sports related concussion and have published multiple national and international guidelines for concussions. I bring my experience and expertise of 15 years as a sports medicine physician to my new practice in West Des Moines.
How would you say you help people the most?
My primary goal is to keep individuals active and able to continue sports and exercise. Helping athletes return to the sports they love safely and as soon as possible is my goal. I help people by offering prompt access to my services, and I strive to ensure they have a great experience and get the care they need.
What makes you tick every day?
What inspires you? I am passionate about sports and I love watching athletes of all ages reach for their goals. It brings me joy when I see them achieve a goal. I am also inspired by a good cup of coffee! I love finding a new coffee shop and tasting a great latte.
What do you love about being in Des Moines?
Des Moines has amazing sports fields, stadiums, and facilities. It is really impressive! I also enjoy the restaurants and small coffee shops. I grew up in the Midwest (Minnesota) and Des Moines and its people feel like home.
What’s next for you? Any big announcements?
I just found out I will be presenting my research entitled “Sex Differences in Clinical Presentation and Recovery of Sport-related concussion” at the 6th International Consensus Conference on Concussion in Sport in Amsterdam in October 2022. This is exciting! The Consensus conference is the Olympics per se for concussion—every 4 years top researchers and medical practitioners world-wide come together and present new research and create the next concussion guideline for athletes to follow.
